Designed for brutally cold conditions, this jacket sports 14 ounces of 550-fill duck down along with an Omni-Heat thermal reflective lining, which boosts heat retention by an average of 20 percent. It's made from a rugged, heavyweight polyester blend that lends uncompromising protection and a bulletproof, urban-bomber feel. The longer cut combines with cozy inner comfort cuffs to ward off the biting wind. Omni-Shield advanced repellency keeps wet weather out, while removable faux fur around the collar adds a final arctic flourish.

Columbia's Omni-Heat Thermal Reflective technology helps regulate your temperature by reflecting and retaining the warmth your body generates--all while dissipating moisture and excess heat to keep you comfortable. The technology truly manages body heat for exceptional performance in the outdoors. It provides an average heat boost of 20 percent without any additional weight or bulk, and, when coupled with other insulating fills, its metallic nature neutralizes the static that can cause migration and discomfort.

Omni-Shield Advanced Repellency is a barrier that resists light rain and stains, keeping you clean and protected. This coated fabric resists all liquids below 170 degrees F from absorbing into the yarns and staining the garment. (The treatment has no noticeable effect on the feel of the material.) The fabric itself will also dry three to five times faster than untreated fabric and will not hold moisture like a conventional fabric, thus remaining lightweight even when wet.

This includes defects in zipper pulls, zippers, snaps, stitching, dye bleeding, leaking of Columbia's waterproof outerwear line, and any other outerwear defects that may occur under normal wear. About Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1938, Columbia Sportswear Company has grown from a small family-owned hat distributor to one of the world's largest outerwear brands and the leading seller of skiwear in the United States. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, chairman of the board, and her son, Tim Boyle, president and CEO, lead the company.

Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. The company introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then-60-year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign.

The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price., November 20, 2010

While more expensive jackets are available, I'm confident the Portage Glacier Down can match them in warmth. As a matter of fact, it almost gets too warm if intense physical activity is conducted while wearing this jacket. It's of generous cut, and feels quite comfortable. I appreciate that I have full range of motion while wearing this - it's not constricting in the least. I've only had a it a couple of days, and I cannot vouch for durability yet, but it does feel fairly resistant to any tears or rips. My former winter jacket was also a Columbia, and it served me quite well over the years.

Positives:

Good build quality.
Excellent warmth.
Generous length - I'm 6'2, and the XL fits me perfectly.
Roomy pockets.

Negatives:

Almost too warm - if you intend to be very active, this jacket may cause you to overheat.
The fur on the hood is faintly ridiculous. It does feel comfortable however.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for Alaska, March 9, 2011

I live in NW Alaska and walk a mile to work everyday. The temperatures have been relatively mild, hovering around zero and this coat doesn't keep me warm. I use it as a shell, wearing a vest and hooded sweat shirt under it. I haven't had to deal with winds much above 30 mph yet, can't wait. My old REI parka vastly out performs this one, but after 15 years I thought I would replace it. Doubt this coat will make even close to that life span. I'll keep the REI around for when it gets really nasty.

I found this coat at a Cabellas last fall and found it too expensive. I found the price here the cheapest, but I'm glad I got to try it on at Cabellas so I knew it would fit though. I am 6 feet tall and 180 pounds athletic, and I bought a Large and it fits just about perfect. It is quite warm even if you just have short sleeves under it. I think the foil-like lining does really help reflect the heat back in. Don't get me wrong it lining is still supple and even soft. If you don't like the fake fur lining around the hood, it snaps off. The one very small improvement I would make to this product would be to have a waste level draw-string. I have a narrow waste and I feel like I have a gut when I look down as it poofs out. There is a draw string at the bottom that keep air from wafting up the coat but a string in the middle to cinch at the waste would be just a bit better.
